United Way of Tucson and Southern Arizona announces free tax
preparation services for hardworking families beginning January 27,
2007 at 17 Volunteer Income Tax Assistance sites, located across our
community.
At
the sites, IRS-trained volunteers will prepare federal and state
income tax returns and counsel clients to make sure that they claim
tax benefits for which they are eligible, including the Earned Income
and Child Tax Credits. Volunteers at sites will also work to link
participants to financial education opportunities to help them better
budget and plan for their future.
The
VITA sites are supported by the EITC Initiative Task Force, a
partnership among United Way of Tucson and Southern Arizona, Pima
County, the City of Tucson and more than 25 nonprofit groups.
Last
year, volunteers completed tax returns for 3,544 hard working
families, resulting in more than $4 million in overall federal
refunds. With more sites this year, the program anticipates serving
up to 5,000 families and individuals with free tax preparation
services.
“The
Earned Income Tax Credit is the largest single tool to move families
into financial stability,” said Rosalva A. Bullock, co-chair of the
Strengthening Families Impact Council at United Way, “Free tax
preparation enables working families to keep more of their hard
earned income".
At
all VITA sites, the tax forms will be filed electronically,
shortening the time it takes for clients to receive their refund.
This free service allows more hard working families to avoid tax
preparation fees and or the high costs of refund anticipation loans.
For
the location of the 17 sites please call Community Information and
Referral at 1-800-352- 3792 or click
here to visit United Way's ETIC website.
