SERVE
& CONNECT: Arthur Agee Inspires YLS!
|

An
Evening at El Charro
The Young
Leaders Society kicked off their volunteer focus program on April 20th
at El Charro Café Downtown.
A true life hero, Arthur Agee, subject of the documentary Hoop Dreams,
spoke to the crowd about his experience growing up on the south-side of
Chicago. His inspirational story moved the crowd when he talked about
"not being a statistic" and how a role model in his life had
made a difference in the person he is today.
Arthur's story fit perfectly with our adopted area of focus:
after-school programs. Statistics say that children who participate in
after-school programs are less likely to be involved in juvenile crime.
Arthur's story got the Young Leaders Society pumped up and excited to
volunteer at two after-school programs to help more youth engage in a
range of safe and productive after-school activities. In addition,
twenty five school aged books were donated to the legacy library by
those who attended the event.
This "Serve" event gave emerging leaders, who do not often
have a chance to meet a true life hero, the opportunity to learn about
perseverance and what each of us can do to make a difference in
someone's life!

There's
a Way to Keep Kids Safe After School
Sister Mary Anne McElmurry is the coordinator
of the Tucson Urban League/Project YES after school program.
She wrote the following about the Young Leaders visiting
her after school program...
"We have approximately 75 to 80 children coming to our program
each afternoon. We help them with homework from school and we
like to try and read with each of them for badly needed practice.
Most of the time, we only get to half of these students due to the lack
of enough
tutors and volunteers.
Last month, the United Way Volunteers came one afternoon
and read to our students. We had about eight of them and OH! what
a difference that made. They talked to the students for a few minutes and
then listened to or helped them to read a book of the students
choice. A couple of the volunteers brought their favorite book,
shared it with some of the children and then donated it to our
library.
We got to every one of the students for the first time
this year and the children
loved the attention and experience. We were so grateful to these
special adults who gave of their time and made a difference in each of
the children's lives they touched that day."
