2006 Days of Caring

2006 United Way Days of Caring

THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT!!!

In 2006, Robert E. Walkup, Major of the City of Tucson, Arizona proclaimed October 4th and 7th, 2006, to be Days of Caring in our community.  Teams of volunteers from 86 businesses and organizations teamed-up to make a difference throughout Southern Arizona through United Way Days of Caring.

Volunteer teams completed 226 projects for 78 local non-profit agencies to make a lasting impact on the lives of children, families and seniors. In all, 2,832 volunteers accomplished a number of projects including construction, painting, landscaping, packing food boxes, reading to children and socializing with seniors.

The signature project for this year’s United Way Days of Caring involved the construction of vegetable gardens at 21 childcare centers and preschools throughout Tucson. These gardens will help children develop basic skills in math, science, gardening and self-sufficiency.  Volunteers from the Marine Corp Recruiting Station North dug plots and put redwood boxes, built by Pima Community College volunteers, in place to create raised vegetable gardens for the children.  Volunteers from Pima Community College read books about gardening, created garden markers, and planted vegetables with the children.  The garden projects is another way United Way’s First Focus on Kids is reaching out to children, enabling them to enter school ready to learn and succeed.

Day of Caring
Success Story

The Lizard Lounge...

A small group of IBM volunteers selected the project to help build bookshelves and paint the community room at the Tucson House residence for elderly and disabled.

They went all out with new signs, cheerful colors and "Lizards" on the walls.

The residents love the room and it has become the social hot spot! The Lizard Lounge has brought new life to the residents now they are hanging out and spending more time with each other.

Since then, Kathryn Eldred (the artist behind the designs) has been working on a second community room at Landers, and is working more magic.See more pictures
