Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is Days of Caring?
A: Days of Caring is a community-wide event that connects thousands of volunteers to local nonprofit organizations and promotes volunteerism through two days of community service. Days of Caring connects volunteers with local nonprofit groups to complete projects that may not otherwise get done. Projects range from painting a mural to building a playground or reading to preschoolers. The unique event gives employees an opportunity to spend their workday on volunteer projects that make a difference in the lives of children, family and seniors. Days of Caring also provides a way for companies to develop long-lasting relationships with colleagues and agencies.

Q: What do we do if it rains on the Days of Caring?
A: There is no "official" rain date for the Days of Caring because many projects will take place indoors and will go on, rain or shine. The rally will go on if a light rain occurs, but will be canceled if it downpours. If a project is weather-dependent, the agency and volunteer team should work out a rain plan. Pre-determine an alternate day to complete the project and how you will get the word out to all volunteers that the project has been rescheduled.

Q: Is United Way providing lunch?
A: To conserve community resources, United Way is not able to provide lunch for volunteers. Agency coordinators are encouraged to purchase light snacks and are required to have ample water for their volunteers. Volunteers are also encouraged to bring any special food or snacks they may want during the day.

Q: Is United Way providing t-shirts?
A: Yes, your project coordinator will take your t-shirt order and United Way will provide free Days of Caring t-shirts for your team.

Q: What is the agency expected to provide for the projects?
A: Agencies will provide all major supplies and tools necessary to complete the project. It is up to the agency to seek donations of supplies and tools, if necessary. Agencies should try to provide light snacks, drinks and water. In addition, agencies should add special event volunteers to their insurance policy.

Q: Can companies specify what projects they want to work on?
A: Yes. There will be a list of available projects on the registration website and companies will be able to choose their own project if the project is still available. Days of Caring registration is on a first-come first-served basis.

Day of Caring
Success Story

The Lizard Lounge...

A small group of IBM volunteers selected the project to help build bookshelves and paint the community room at the Tucson House residence for elderly and disabled.

They went all out with new signs, cheerful colors and "Lizards" on the walls.

The residents love the room and it has become the social hot spot! The Lizard Lounge has brought new life to the residents now they are hanging out and spending more time with each other.

Since then, Kathryn Eldred (the artist behind the designs) has been working on a second community room at Landers, and is working more magic.See more pictures
