If you are comfortable with a computer, there’s no need to wait in line at a VITA site! United Way and its partners offer several options to prepare your own taxes for free.
Do it from home!
Starting January 15, 2012, you can prepare your taxes from the comfort of your home or office by using MyFreeTaxes. This service is offered for free to anyone who earns less than $58,000 per year. MyFreeTaxes is provided in partnership by United Way of Tucson and Southern Arizona, the Walmart Foundation, One Economy and the National Disability Institute.
Turbo Tax Freedom Edition
Knowledgeable volunteers are standing by at select VITA sites to assist you in filing your own tax return, using TurboTax Freedom Edition. This free service is offered by the Intuit Freedom Foundation for anyone who earns less than $50,000 or qualifies for the Earned Income Tax Credit.
Assistance with TurboTax Freedom Edition is available during VITA operational hours at Goodwill Midvale Job Connection Center and Quincie Douglas Library (English schedule) (Spanish schedule).
Knowledgeable volunteers are standing by at select VITA sites to assist you in filing your own tax return, using IRS FASTFile.
Assistance with FASTFile is available during VITA operational hours at Armory Park Senior Center. (English schedule) (Spanish schedule)
Please be sure to bring the following documents to use TurboTax Freedom Edition or IRS FastFile:
- Picture I.D. for taxpayer and spouse (if applicable)
- Social Security Number or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number for each family member
- Proof of income, including W-2s and 1099 forms
- Documentation of deductible expenses
- Account and routing numbers of checking and savings accounts for direct deposit of refunds
- Prior year tax return (if possible)
