Details: Please join us for a conversation to envision a better future of aging in Pima County. Featuring a keynote from Anna Maria Chávez, Chief Strategy Officer and Senior Vice President of External Affairs for the National Council on Aging (NCOA).  Community members of all ages interested in exploring possibilities and ideas about reinventing the future of aging in Pima County must attend.  Hosted by the United Way ELDER Alliance and Pima Council on Aging.   There is no cost to attend. General timeline for event: 7:30 am: Registration, networking and continental breakfast8:00-11:00 am:      - Keynote by Anna Maria Chávez     - Community Conversation and workshop11:00 am: Event concludes   Biography Anna Maria Chávez is Chief Strategy Officer and Senior Vice President of External Affairs for the National Council on Aging (NCOA), the nation’s oldest advocacy organization dedicated to the nation’s leading service and advocacy organization dedicated to improving the health and economic security of older Americans, especially those who are struggling. She oversees NCOA’s policy and advocacy, marketing and communications, fund and strategic partnership development, and community network. In this role, Chávez is responsible for advancing the organization’s mission to improve the health and economic security of 10 million older adults by 2020. Throughout her career, Chávez has been a passionate advocate for helping others across every stage of life. In her home state of Arizona, Chávez worked for nearly a decade on aging issues. While serving in Gov. Janet Napolitano’s administration as director of intergovernmental affairs, she launched the governor’s Aging 2020 initiative and created the Arizona Division of Aging and Adult Services. She has also served as assistant director of the Arizona Division of Aging and Community Services.

Details: Do you know a Literacy Champion? A Literacy Champion is a local educator who has gone above and beyond to improve literacy in our community. Now in its 3rd year, The Literacy Champion Award is presented to two early childhood educators teaching in preschool through 3rd grade. Details: 14th Annual Business Leaders for Early Education Breakfast Hosted by Women United Keynote Speakers:Collette Brown, Manager of Strategic Community Development at Freeport-McMoRanSteve Holmes, Superintendent of the Sunnyside Unified School District Last year, 720 influential business and community leaders attended Women United’s annual Business Breakfast and helped to raise more than $67,000 for early childhood literacy. Women United combines the financial power and collective talents of local philanthropic women leaders to address early childhood literacy in our community. Children who read proficiently by the end of third grade are more likely to succeed academically and graduate from high school prepared for college and careers. 1 in 4 children in Pima County are not reaching this crucial benchmark.
